Human
Mammal

Humans grow and change too, but we don't change our shape as much as a frog or butterfly!

Our stages are:
We start as a baby, then learn to walk and talk as a toddler. We go to school as a child. Later, we become a teenager and finally an adult.
💡 Fun Facts
- Babies have about 100 more bones than adults! The small bones join together as we grow.
- We have two sets of teeth in our lifetime: baby teeth and adult teeth.
- When you are a child, you grow taller very quickly. An adult has stopped growing taller.
Name Story
Homo sapiens
means “the wise one — the only animal that named itself”
What does its name mean?
- Homo — human being; some link it to 'humus', the earth — 'the earthly one'Latin
- sapiens — wise, knowingLatin (sapere, 'to taste; to have good sense')
We are the one species that got to choose its own name — and we chose "the wise one". Hidden inside "wise" is an older meaning, "to taste", so wisdom first meant the power to taste and tell things apart (the same root gives us "savour" and "sage").
