Lynx
Lynx
Mammal
A medium-sized wild cat with tufted ears and a short tail, a stealthy ambush hunter of deer and hares.
Name Story
Lynx lynx
means “the shining-eyed one”
a traditional storyThat the "shine" was chosen for its glowing, keen eyes is a long-held traditional explanation rather than a proven fact.
What does its name mean?
- Lynx (×2) — the lynx — rooted in an ancient word meaning 'to shine'Greek, from a root meaning 'light' (the same family as Latin 'lux')
Though its name is simply "lynx" twice over, it reaches back to an old word meaning "to shine" — fitting for a sharp-eyed cat whose eyes glow in the dark, helping it hunt at dawn and dusk.
