- rosa-sinensis — rose of ChinaLatin rosa ‘rose’ + sinensis ‘of China’
Its name calls it ‘the rose of China’ — though it isn’t really a rose at all, but a cousin of the marsh-mallow. Its big, showy flower simply reminded people of a rose. Where it first grew wild is still a mystery.
