Buzzing Bugs! Bees vs Wasps!

A side-by-side comparison of bees and wasps, covering appearance, behaviour, and what makes each one beneficial to the environment.

View:
Buzzing Bugs! Bees vs. Wasps! The Master Pollinators - Bees are nature's top gardeners! They spend their days visiting flowers to sip sweet nectar and collect dusty pollen. They have special hairs on their legs or bellies just for trapping pollen to carry back home. Without bees, we wouldn't have many of our favorite foods like apples, pumpkins, or strawberries! The Pest Patrollers - Wasps are the garden's security guards! While adults also drink nectar, they are expert bug hunters. They catch hungry flies, aphids, and other pests to feed to their growing young. Without wasps, our gardens would be completely overrun by plant-eating bugs! Incredible Bug Architecture - Bees build their homes out of wax! They chew it until it is soft and shape it into perfect, golden hexagons. Wasps are the original paper makers! They scrape up old wood and mix it with their spit to build amazing gray, papery nests. Spot the Difference! Bee: Round, chubby, and super fuzzy! Legs are often thick with yellow pollen. Very peaceful while visiting flowers. Wasp: Smooth, shiny, and brightly colored. Very skinny waist with long, dangling legs. Fast and darting flight. Explorer's Challenge - Next time you see a buzzing bug on a bright flower, stand perfectly still like a tree! Look closely at its waist and body. Is it a fuzzy bee or a smooth wasp? Remember, look with your eyes, not your hands!
