Climate & Environment
Pitch black, freezing cold (around 2Β°C), and under immense, crushing water pressure.
Key Plants
No plants can grow here because there is absolutely zero sunlight for photosynthesis. Everything relies on 'marine snow' (dead things falling from above).
π‘ Fun Facts
- The pressure at the bottom of the Mariana Trench is over 1,000 times the normal atmospheric pressure at sea level.
- Because food is so incredibly rare in the deep sea, the anglerfish has an expandable stomach to swallow prey twice its own size!
Key Creatures

Anglerfish
Lophiiformes
How it survives here:
Uses a glowing lure on its head (created by bioluminescent bacteria) to attract curious prey straight into its massive, sharp-toothed mouth in the dark.

Giant isopod
How it survives here:
A deep-sea scavenger with a rigid, tough exoskeleton to survive the immense crushing pressure of the abyss.

Vampire squid
How it survives here:
Can turn itself inside out to display frightening spines and release glowing mucus to confuse predators in the dark.

Dumbo Octopus
How it survives here:
Uses ear-like fins to hover in the pitch black depths just above the ocean floor.

Gulper Eel
How it survives here:
Has a massive, pelican-like mouth to swallow rare meals that are bigger than itself.
