Climate & Environment
Temperate, experiencing four distinct seasons. Ponds create their own microclimate (a tiny, specific climate zone) that can freeze in winter and become very warm in summer.
Key Plants
Water lilies, duckweed, reeds, and bulrushes which provide oxygen and shelter. They also rely on phytoplankton (microscopic floating plants) to feed tiny creatures.
π‘ Fun Facts
- A single pond can support over 1,000 different species of animals!
- Unlike a fast-moving river, a pond's still water allows delicate insects like pond skaters to literally walk on the water's surface.
Key Creatures

Common frog
Rana temporaria
How it survives here:
Frogs lay their jelly-like eggs (spawn) in the still water. The tadpoles grow underwater before developing legs to hop onto land.

Great diving beetle
How it survives here:
Breathes underwater by trapping a bubble of air under its wing cases.

Smooth newt
How it survives here:
Can absorb oxygen directly through its moist skin while underwater.

Stickleback
How it survives here:
A small fish with sharp spines on its back to deter predators in the pond.

Common Toad
How it survives here:
Has dry, warty skin allowing it to spend more time away from water than frogs.
