Climate & Environment
Hot, very humid, and wet all year round. The canopy gets the most sunlight and the heaviest rainfall of the entire forest.
Key Plants
Towering trees with wide, umbrella-like branches, heavily draped in lianas (vines) and epiphytes (plants growing on branches) like orchids and bromeliads.
π‘ Fun Facts
- The rainforest canopy is so crowded with life that over 50% of all plant and animal species on Earth live in this one layer!
- Sloths are so adapted to hanging upside down in the canopy that their organs are attached to their rib cage so they don't crush their lungs.
Key Creatures

Three-toed Sloth
Bradypus
How it survives here:
Moves incredibly slowly to avoid being seen by eagles. Its fur even grows green algae, providing perfect camouflage among the leaves.

Scarlet macaw
How it survives here:
Uses its incredibly powerful, curved beak to crack open hard rainforest nuts and seeds that other animals can't eat.

Spider monkey
How it survives here:
Has a prehensile (gripping) tail that acts like a fifth hand for swinging safely through the high branches.

Toucan
How it survives here:
Uses its huge, lightweight bill to reach fruit on branches too thin to support its weight.

Howler Monkey
How it survives here:
Uses incredibly loud calls to communicate with its troop through the dense foliage.
