- Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, but they are home to 25% of all marine species!
- Because corals need sunlight for their algae to make food, you will only ever find coral reefs in shallow, clear water.

Clownfish

How it survives here:
Develops a thick layer of mucus on its skin to protect it from the stinging tentacles of the sea anemone, giving it a safe, hidden home (commensalism).

Parrotfish
How it survives here:
Uses its beak-like teeth to scrape algae off coral. It digests the algae and poops out the coral as fine white sand!

Moray eel
How it survives here:
Hides its long body inside narrow coral crevices, waiting to ambush passing prey with its sharp teeth.

Sea Turtle
How it survives here:
Has a streamlined shell and powerful flippers for gliding effortlessly over the reef.

Reef Shark
How it survives here:
A sleek predator that patrols the reef edges, keeping the fish populations healthy.
