Climate & Environment
Temperate. The tree itself creates various microclimates (tiny climate zones) from its sunny, breezy canopy down to its shaded, damp roots.
Key Plants
The oak tree itself, plus epiphytes (plants that grow on other plants) like moss and lichens growing on its bark.
π‘ Fun Facts
- A mature oak tree can support over 280 species of insects, making it a crucial hub of biodiversity.
- Squirrels and jays bury acorns from oak trees to eat later, but they often forget them, which is exactly how new oak forests are planted!
Key Creatures

Purple hairstreak butterfly
Favonius quercus
How it survives here:
Spends almost its entire life high in the oak canopy. The caterpillars feed exclusively on oak leaves.

Eurasian jay
How it survives here:
Caches (buries) thousands of acorns in the ground for winter food, helping plant new oak trees.

Gall wasp
How it survives here:
Lays eggs in oak leaves, causing the tree to grow protective round 'galls' that shelter the growing larvae.

Grey Squirrel
How it survives here:
Sharp claws and a bushy tail help it balance while climbing high in the branches.

Blue Tit
How it survives here:
Nests in small holes in the trunk and hunts for insects in the canopy.
